Hi all...

So this month's theme: Warrior
definition: A brave or experienced soldier or fighter

This can be interpreted as fantasy, sci-fi, modern... up to you! Of course, we always like loose interpretations as well, so while you are welcome to create a fantasy rpg style armored badass, this could also be a frail old warrior who has past his prime but will not give up the fight. Hence... have fun and good luck!

As luck would have it, I finished this one up just last month for a window display for the movie. It stands about 2' tall and is on 1/2" foamboard that is hand cut. Gessoed and then painted with acrylic paint and finished with markers.

My first time entering one of these so go easy of me. Used a good ol' fashion No.2 pencil with a mechanical pencil for cleaner lines, and a white prisma color to blend a couple areas all on wonderful $1.61 sketchbook paper. I may also have jacked up image size when posting, again, my first time.

So then some friends tore my work down and insisted i was in too much of a hurry so i went back and attacked it with some 2b 6b action and rescanned.

Hi, this little pal´s name is "Troo´fl" and he is a truffle warrior, his tribe is known for there skills in chocolate truffle making, some time ago his tribe was attacked and all the last base materials of the season for the truffles were stolen, he and the truffle army must to recover the ingredients for tribe´s only support.

I guess he is the maniac of the horde, don´t take his truffles without permit or he may cut cha.

Tools:

- Graphite pencil 2B, 4B and 8B.
- 0.5mm Mechanical pencil - 2B.
- Blending stick.
- Kneaded eraser.
- Plastic eraser.
- 21x32 cm Sketchbook paper.

Anyway the picture is of Sitting Bull, a real native warrior. It was done on thick yellow paper with charcoal pencils for Sitting Bull, and HB pencils for everything else.

My first entry. I haven't draw in a while, specially on paper, forgot how fun it is.

So I tried to combine classic roman gladiator with a touch of futuristic design, sorta tron, probably the stripe lines will glow in the dark... or something like that :)
I always want to draw stylized character, so here it is.

I do realized its not symmetrical, specially the hand, oh well.

Well, according to the rules:

Guidelines:

The rules are simple. At the beginning of each month we will announce the winners from the past month as well as a new theme for the next. Entries are collected on the 1st of the new month to begin judging and usually the process to judge and announce the winners takes about five days.

To enter the contest, you must REPLY to the contest thread with your submission. Do not begin a new thread for your entry as it will not be collected for judging. Artwork must be made by holding a stick like object in your hand which creates marks on a flat surface. Pencil, pen, marker, charcoal, etc on paper, vellum, cardboard and so on. We don't want to see digital art here... we're old skool.

Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Yeah exactly, the purpose of the forum is to show sketches so we can all learn together, it kind of defeats the purpose to show a highly polishes pencil illustration which takes mores time to finish, it is all about the our thought process.

I chose to draw a University of Iowa wrestler. Iowa has won 23 NCAA championships since 1975 and made a name for themselves along the way, "being down right mean." They might not have the flashiest moves, or nicest style out there, but they fight for every inch of the wrestling mat everytime they step foot on it. They have a reputation and have been dubbed, "the iowa style" its a style that Legendary Coach Dan Gable preached to his athletes and it was to attack attack attack! An Iowa Hawkeye Wrestler is a perfect warrior!

This is a character I am working on, for a comic book called "Wacko". He is a former soldier turned serial killer. He basically finds he enjoys killing, while deployed and continues to kill when he comes home. A bit of a twist on the warrior theme.

Question: Can we get an idea of how you choose the winners? Personally I would really enjoy to hear what (whomever chooses the winner) goes in to choosing the 4 winners.

Actually, more interaction with the moderators as the challenge goes on would be great! We really only get a topic at the beginning of the month and then a notice of winners 4 weeks later.
