Hi all!

Welcome to the ST forum! Here host a monthly sketching contest for our community to participate in... and win some cool stuff! Our contest is sponsored by The Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com), who create an amazing array of art instructional DVDs.

Guidelines:

The rules are simple. At the beginning of each month we will announce the winners from the past month as well as a new theme for the next. Entries are collected on the 1st of the new month to begin judging and usually the process to judge and announce the winners takes about five days.

To enter the contest, you must REPLY to the contest thread with your submission. Do not begin a new thread for your entry as it will not be collected for judging. Artwork must be made by holding a stick like object in your hand which creates marks on a flat surface. Pencil, pen, marker, charcoal, etc on paper, vellum, cardboard and so on. We don't want to see digital art here... we're old skool.

Prizes:

Each month we will select FOUR winners. The winning entries will be announced in the contest thread. The winners will then be contacted via email or the forum private message system (PM).

1st place: Fifteen DVDs from The Gnomon Workshop. (worth over $750!)
2nd place: Ten DVDs from The Gnomon Workshop.
3rd place: Five DVDs from The Gnomon Workshop.
4th place: Two DVDs from The Gnomon Workshop.

Good Luck to all!

-ST / Alex

Hi, just wanted to ask (although the name implies it) if only drawings and sketches are accepted or could it also be paintings? (Acrylics, Watercolor, Colorpens etc.)

Just curious :)

Hi,

So how do I get the theme for the current sketch contest? Do you normally e-mail it out at the beginning of the month? Please let me know.
Thanks.

Well it is simply being posted in the forum with the month and year. Probably like in the gnomon workshop contest right after the winners are announced.

Hi sketchtheatre guys,

I just wanted to say that you need to update the prizes section because apparently, the 1st place winner only gets one t-shirt and not 2. I was fortunate enough to get 1st place in august and Fernando Caire told me there was some misscommunication between you guys. Thanks again for the other prizes and I look forward to participating each month from now on.

My two cents as to how to improve the competition and attract a greater quantity and caliber of submissions is as follows.

1. split the contest into a pro and amateur categories. This will both foster the competitiveness of the better submissions and not discourage none pros from entering. Their should perhaps be different kinds of prizes so that pros are not tempted to submit in the amateur category.

2. set clear criteria by which each submission will be judged on a numerical scale and discloses at the end of judging how each submission scored both by category and by judge.

The Categories I recommend are:

Technical Difficulty (how hard was it to create the submission: difficult anatomy, prospective, or subject to render).

Composition (was the subject placed or presented in dynamic or compelling manner or was it placed in the center without fore tough of visual interest).

Overall Impression (did the submission grab me do to presentation, subject mater, technical execution or innovative style. style points and cutesy points go hear as well as wow points).

Technical proficiency (mastery of media used, innovation of technique).
Originality of work and its innovativeness (in any respect be it character design, style, media used, ext.)

3. Decide and clearly define if it a sketch or a drawing contest as they are different in nature. A sketch is produced quickly typically within the span of an hour our less, just see the mini movies on this site to see what I am referring to. A drawing has no set limit of time to it and is worked on until every single aspect of it is to satisfaction.

This distinction is very important because as a pro, there is not much motivation to spend more than an hour on a sketch which I do not know if I will receive any compensation for. I am certain other pros may feel the same way. Perhaps a solution is to make the pro category a sketch contest and the amateur category a drawing contest.

4. Identify who the judges are before hand and what makes them qualified to be a judge. I suggest at lest five pros from divers creative fields. I also suggest that the judges should change every month and that their be noting that might be perceived as a conflict of interest such as a jude summiting work for a contest they are judging. I also believe that anything that identifies the contestant should be removed from the samples the judges view as is typical practices in creative competitions.

I would love to receive feed back from both users and administrators as to my suggestions.

Ones more my intent is only to assist in making the sketch contest live up to it's full potentiol.

My personal email is
lifeliberty@hotmail.com
Thank you,
John Alfonso

-The entry must be submitted by the 1st of the next month. November's entry must be submitted by December 1st.

-To check if you properly submitted it, make sure you click on the thread for the month. In other words, within the "Sketch to Win" section, click on the top most thread labeled "November 2009". Once you are in that thread you should see the theme announced along with any entries already posted including your own. A few of us already posted.

-I suggest opening a free account at photobucket or any image hosting site of your choice. Photobucket.com is ok. Start an account there and upload your entry for November and all future entries into your personalized photo album. I suggest this because now you'll have a general place to upload all of your art so you can continue to submit to ST and other art communities.
Hope this helps, ask more questions and keep drawing. Don't put drawing off longer than you have to!

Generally in these communities, a friendly size is 800x600 pixels. I suggest working big and then resizing down to 800x600 or lower to upload for entries. Just remember that either dimension cannot exceed 800 or 600. Keep your resizing "proportion" property on. I'm new to this and that's how I do it.

Hey everyone!
I'm new to sketch theatre, so please forgive me if this question seems idiotic, but heres my question.

I submitted my design for the 2010 january alien salesman contest about a week ago and my design still isn't posted. Did I do something wrong? is there an "evaluation period" before it can be posted?

if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it and good luck to everyone on their submission!

Well I don't know how you did it so i can't say if you did something wrong.
But anyway, use "new reply" button in the Alien Salesman thread and push "manage attachments" button to upload your image, or upload your image onto photobucket or imageshack and using the (img) code (use ] and [ bricks) insert your image into your post. You can of course use both ways at once. There's no evaluation time - your post is sent and shown at the same time.
At least i did it in this way some months ago.
Hope it helped:)

Did you ever get a response on the watercolor, acrylic question? The rules seem to keep it limited to something that makes a mark on a flat surface. Thoughts?

Thanks,

I would have the exact same question!
In high art ink and watercolor IS a graphic media but as far as I now acrylic is not.
So I would suggest watercolor is eligible...
but hey.. I will try it this month and we will see :)

It is a little frustrating that none of the questions in this thread seem to have been answered and the first post is still quite vague.

I'm a beginner and outside the US, I'd like to ask the same question about eligibility for prizes. That is, if I draw anything I think is good enough to enter. Is it only for professional artists?

Hey, I'm looking into the prize eligibility for you, and will post again here if/when I hear back.

As for who can compete, anyone can. You can take a look at some of the previous contests and see a a wide range of craft in the entries. The beauty of the competitions are that they are sketch competitions, and therefore allow anything from thumbnail-quality doodles, to nicely rendered, erm, doodles.

Don't worry too much about whether or not your drawings are amazing; the point of the contest is to stretch you creative abilities, challenge yourself, and - of course - to have fun. It's a friendly arena to test your creative meddle, and everyone is pretty supportive of each other.

That said, get in here and draw. It's always nice to have another artist to be inspired by, and hopefully inspire as well.

Cheers,

-matt.

Thanks for your response Matt. I'm pushing myself at the moment to draw every day. It is just a hobby but one I want to get better at which means practice. I've put my sketchbook in my profile.

My main issue is I get to a certain point then I lose enthusiasm and stop drawing. Hopefully these challenges will give me a reason to keep going even if I don't enter what I do until I feel it all out a bit more and practice a bit more :)
