View Full Version : October, 2009: Grave Digger

Ahhh... Fall is upon us, even here in LA. The weather has cooled and our favorite holiday is just a few weeks away. Of course, October has to have an appropriate theme... Grave Digger!

If you're looking for some good inspiration, we highly recommend checking out 'Cannibal Flesh Riot' directed by the ever so talented Gris Grimley: an offbeat movie about a couple ghouls looking to dig up some fresh corpses. Good times!

good luck everyone!

Hey everyone,

I thought I might start this off with a sketch I did this morning. I hope you like it. It was made with a ballpoint pen on smooth bristol paper.

Whewie! I have a long, long list of pardon requests on this one, but I'll let it stand as is without further commentary, other than to say it was made with a mechanical pencil, Tombo ABT N15 (one of those dual brush/pen things), and a Pigma Micron 005 on a sketch pad. Oh, I also used Citadel Colour Skull White (paint I normally use on fantasy/sci-fi miniatures) to cover up a f-up on the pants. OK, shutting up now.

Hey Transgression. I like the character idea. He's pretty original. For his originality, though, his setting is rather mundane, as is his activity. To me, a 4-armed wood-headed creature should be in an equally interesting setting. The open hole doesn't do it for me. Is he the grave digger for a regular cemetery, or something special? If it's special, then what is it? Is he the grave digger for animals that die in the forest? Maybe he's an intergalactic gravedigger sent to make the entirety of earth one big grave for the many planets who need to have additional burial plots....anyway, his setting should be dictated by thoughts like this.

Keep it up! I can't wait to see the finished piece.

True that Man and I Completely agree with you I'm still on the fence with what to actually do for the composition... I'm thankful for the comments and the ideas a whole lot and cant wait to show you the finished image :)

Hello Sketch theatre! This is my entry for the October Sketch To Win Contest.

It depicts an Isolated, deformed Grave Digger working in his shed, he contemplates night after night of how he will reap his vengeance on the world for banning him from society. He sits on his chair, antagonized, waiting for an idea.

let me know what you think!

Thanks, MarkMorbidity! Like your pic too.

If I may, I was looking at your image and thinking that it might benefit from some highlights on the outline gravediggers body and also on at least the nearest headstone. Given the size and stage of the moon, there should be some good highlights and shadows helping things pop out a bit more. Hope I'm not being too critical for a sketch :)

MarkMorbidity: Good. It's always a "try and see" thing when it comes to comments and crits. Some folks like it (like you and me) and some folks get defensive. Btw, take the things I say about the work here with a grain of salt, I mostly draw little cartoon dogs, etc instead of the work of the pros in the videos.

stephen fedewa: you did succeed in evoking the feel of an old west type of scene. ;)

I'm not trying to insult you and I hope no one thinks I'm overstepping my bounds within this forum, but to be brutally honest, you need some work on your general anatomy skills and other areas of drawing. Try searching for the books that were written by Andrew Loomis. These books are old and out of print, but they are some of the best books that you could read. You might be able to find a pdf or some images of the pages out here on interwebs. I think Barnes & Noble has some sort of reprints available that aren't expensive... or go purchase some of the Gnomon videos on drawing

I found all those things to be helpful to me, so I hope they will be helpful to you too.

Thanks for the nice feedback :) Yeah I know it's a bit much (looks like the rope is attached somewhere unter his arm) but we are talking about something supernatural here  :D

(btw I pretty much just started learning how wrinkles and anatomy work so I am eager to learn more. Tried to ignore that for way too many years, but that's another story.) Thank you again.

Lomien: I understand all too well. If you could see the stuff I thought was ok from about 10 years ago, well ya know. :) If you don't mind my saying about the digger's anatomy, he looks a little over twisted where I'm guessing his torso and hips are ? Kinda hard to tell under the robe ;)

I actualy find that the character is the most important thing. the eye has to lokk at the character... in the end, the background isnt that important.. as long as you get the idea

gdboston: I saw you post that you'd take any feedback... so, I quickly logged in to look at your image. There's nothing I can think of to say that'd be a help to you in any way, other than to tell ya it looks good and creepy. Now I have to go back to my sketch book and come up with something a little bit better ;) At least it's nice to know that I'm not the oldest one posting here now

riot26: The scanner's color kinda helps your sketch. Gives it a creepier feel. The best advice I can give you is the same that I gave out earlier to stephen fedawa, and that is check out the books by Andrew Loomis if you can find them. The info contained in those books is priceless.

Everyone: Do ya'll mind that I'm trying to comment as much as I can? Should I stop? Don't want to make anyone feel bad or anything like that =)

From the woods it crawls
Twisting and scratching with wicked claws
To fool campers nearby
To feast on their bodies as still as they lie
But first it needs a ruse
A body buried, stripped of shirt and shoes
In this its mark is left
Making corpses walk, taking rot and bringing death

This is my Grave Digger. The image came to mind as soon as I read the theme - A beautiful woman digging a massive grave with a very tiny shovel. Of course as all drawings do, it evolved while being created. Now she's in the theme of Halloween with even the storm coming to get her, but seems a tad childish with her kids buckets and spades. What's be burying?

I hope you enjoy, and maybe be inspired as I have with other drawings from Sketch Theatre.

Chilling cries into Godless nights
Wane within a hollow world's end
Then cast is the empty silent blight
Who's eldrich fingers doth extend

Throughout the warped forsaken plain
Corpses pepper the shallow soil
As behemoths decend from stars to reign
They begin their excavationary toil

To feast, to feast
The crop is ripe
To feast, to feast
Through Godless nights

Well good work everyone! This might be my second entry on an ST contest (see entry posted already). I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. I went a little further with the thought process of designing my entry than I thought I would. It is, however, completed. Well at least completed to the level I had in mind. Points for anyone who can tell me what my entry is a parady of. This was an accomplishment for me, because I always start working on entries, but I always chicken out. Let this be a learning experience for all so that we all can walk away better artist. If you didn't learn something new about your skill level by doing your entries, shame on you. Drawing is not a mindless activity. It's the most joyfull problem solving practice. God bless!

Congrats winners! I have a question. Do the winners get to pick their DVD's or are they picked for them?

Hi all! Here's my first entry at sketch theater! some great sketches going on here and I wanted to be a part of the fun! I'll try to get a better photograph of it, sadly it's too large to scan.
