Hi everyone,
I am a huge fan of the site, I entered in a piece of artwork for the last "Gearhead" competition. I used alot of pen and watercolrs when most people seemed to have used mainly pencil. So I would love to hear some ideas about what mediums to use for this competition.
Thanks

Pencils are very forgiving, and they are easier to manipulate. It all comes down to what "look" you are seeking, and a matter of preference and comfort. I like to experiment with different mediums. I like to sketch with pen or a fine tip marker sometimes. This is a great exercise, and in a way a freedom to me. Sketching with a permanent medium forces you to plan ahead and if you mess up improvise with what you have. Most of the time you end up with new and better ideas. Go with your gut man. By the way great job on your sketch. I am interested to know how long you have been drawing.:D

Thanks artenstien,
Great advice! I do often find that my best drawings are when I have to turn a mistake into a plus. To answer your question I am 15 and I have been drawing since I was 2. Althogh just recently I self-published my own comic, you can find a link for it on my website tbrpress.com.
By the way, great avatar artenstien!

Hey everyone,
This is my first entry for the Gunslinger contest. I feel like it doesn't quite look like I wanted it to so I may end up re-doing the picture. I usually don't use pencils that much but I figured why not try something new. Anyway, I would love to hear any critique that anyone has to offer.
Good luck everyone!

Great drawing!
Is that smoke coming out of his eyes?
Thanx alot for that Askur and yes that is smoke trailing from his eyes and gunns
I thought the smoke trail would add a cool effect for the character since he is like a Phantom Gunslinger who fades like smoke and reappears and leaves the smoke and ashes of his victims behind him
Well anyway thats what I have so far for his profile
Thanx again,

Hey everyone, this is my entry for this month. I enjoyed working on this piece. It's very different from what I normally work on. I thought about adding some fantastical elements to this guy but I finally decided to go for a more natural look.
This guy is Jack Thorn. He is a vigilante that uses his pistols, Faust and Dante, to send corrupted souls to be judged by the almighty. This is his punishment for the crimes he committed throughout his life. He roams from town to town doing his deed to try to regain his soul, one sinner at a time.

Hey everyone,
I put my sketch up but now I am having second thoughts about it. I really love the way alot of you guys used supernatural elements in your sketches. Mine is really just 2 figures and a background. Should I keep it or re-do it? I would love any critique you have.
Thanx

Jack, one of few survivors in the Boone town massacre, was blind from a shot to the face. He dedicated his life seeking justice for those brutally murdered in his town. Blindly seeking justice, his bullets never fell short of their mark guided by the tormented souls of the boone town deceased.

uffffff ...first i fell asleep and my drawing wasn't finished...i magically wake up just 2 hours before ending time....i thought enough time to finish...buuuuut i forgot that i had just formatted my pc...and i haven't installed my scanner drivers...so when i finished my work i realize of that and just a half of hour to ending time.....found the drivers and i installed that...well all ok, time to breathe, but windows fax and scan utility didn't recognized my scanner....waaaaaaa, so then i was searching for my photoshop installer...all my room filled of cd's anywhere...finally i found the installer...but o crap...error on installing....i said "i give up" but i decided to try again windows fax and scan utility...and magic happens...so i could send my work finally just about 5 min to end time...(so i couldn't adjust levels and brightness/contrast)
after all...nice experience and nice to participate in sketchtheather contest

Here's my entry for this months theme. Unfortunately i had to use my dig. camera to take the pic so the quality is kind of shot. Done with 2h/3h pencils on 14x17 bristolboard. Any crits welcomed, good luck folks

Thanks for the comment Sacrafice.
I decided to try and retake some pics of the original drawing as i didn't like how the other pic came out. I think this one came out much better.

Wow!
I am glad I did not submit anything as some people who submitted work were bamboozled.
FleshGOREdon should have clearly been in first place and not third.
hello (who did not place!?) should of been in second.(though I wish hello had been able to upload a larger image as it was clear details were lost in the small size)
Sacrafice (who also did not place!?) should of perhaps been Third or at the very lest placed higher than askur.
Artenstien and faithlessthe1dergirl (who came in first???) as a tossup for fourth.
Off cores, I work as a Creative Director so what the heck do I really know for judging submissions on the bases of technical difficulty and overall craftsmanship. It seems to me that the emphasis was on cutesy and not technical proficiency. I definitely do not care to see future contest swamp with Disney like caricatures holding guns.
Instead I hope to see explorations of dramatic foreshortening and prospective, dynamic compositions, innovative character designs and overall visual, experimentation in lighting, shading, texturing, coloring and rendering techniques (almost completely absent in the submissions), experimentation in both how materials are used and which materials are used (completely absent in the submissions)
My two cents as to how to improve the competition and attract a greater quantity and caliber of submissions is as follows.
1. split the contest into a pro and amateur categories. This will both foster the competitiveness of the better submissions and not discourage none pros from entering. Their should perhaps be different kinds of prizes so that pros are not tempted to submit in the amateur category.
2. set clear criteria by which each submission will be judged on a numerical scale and discloses at the end of judging how each submission scored both by category and by judge.
The Categories I recommend are:
Technical Difficulty (how hard was it to create the submission: difficult anatomy, prospective, or subject to render).
Composition (was the subject placed or presented in dynamic or compelling manner or was it placed in the center without fore tough of visual interest).
Overall Impression (did the submission grab me do to presentation, subject mater, technical execution or innovative style. style points and cutesy points go hear as well as wow points).
Technical proficiency (mastery of media used, innovation of technique).
Originality of work and its innovativeness (in any respect be it character design, style, media used, ext.)
3. Decide and clearly define if it a sketch or a drawing contest as they are different in nature. For example FleshGOREdon's and Sacrafice's submissions were clearly drawings and not sketches. Hello's and mad mind's submissions were sketches and not drawings. A sketch is produced quickly typically within the span of an hour our less, just see the mini movies on this site to see what I am referring to. A drawing has no set limit of time to it and is worked on until every single aspect of it is to satisfaction.
This distinction is very important because as a pro, there is not much motivation to spend more than an hour on a sketch which I do not know if I will receive any compensation for. I am certain other pros may feel the same way. Perhaps a solution is to make the pro category a sketch contest and the amateur category a drawing contest.
4. Identify who the judges are before hand and what makes them qualified to be a judge. I suggest at lest five pros from divers creative fields. I also suggest that the judges should change every month and that their be noting that might be perceived as a conflict of interest such as a jude summiting work for a contest they are judging. I also believe that anything that identifies the contestant should be removed from the samples the judges view as is typical practices in creative competitions.
I would love to receive feed back from both users and administrators as to my suggestions.
Ones more my intent is only to assist in making the sketch contest live up to it's full potentiol.

All I have to say is WTF! I know my submission wasn't at all up to the quality or stature as alot of other ppl on here and not taking anything away from the winners but man c'mon there r alot of great peices on here that I feel just got the Screwjob not to mention any names but lets see Sacrifice,Portiz,Artina,Grphcvis, just to name a few.........
I mean honestly do the judges just toss these in a hat real quick, shuffle them around and select whatever pops out or are they really looking closely and taking the consideration to evaluate the time, dedication, technique, and creativy put into each peice
I was really excited in the beginning to participate in these contest and be part of this site cause I figured hey man this a great way to show off some creative sketchwork and receive crits and comments from other great artist (Possibly) and to be part of which at first seemed like a well put together establishment, but I think this site has got some growing up to do in many aspects and needs to make some changes so other artist don't feel the same way in the future
Sincerely, pissed

jeez...
You two need to chill out or simply not participate. To publicly scream and whine over who did and did not win the contest is, simply put, unprofessional and childish. We chose the winners because those were our favorites, plain and simple. This is not to say that this wasn't a difficult choice, or that there weren't many other submissions that we liked a lot. Also, all you need to do is look at the artists that we are representing here and know that st IS a pro run organization. But technical complexity or draftsmanship has NOTHING to do with the quality of an idea. And here we like concepts just as much, if not more sometimes, than draftsmanship. Just because something is 'cute' is not a reason to criticize it over something that is 'serious'. I mean, c'mon.
Sketchtheatre is a free site that promotes artists and bands.
Your anger at us is really unnecessary.

Yes, you are correct my reaction and Outburst to the end results of this contest was very unnecessary and very unprofesional on my part and could have been done more appropriately if at all, I sincerely (Apologize) and this will never happen again and hope you accept it as well as my future Participation:)
I really do like this site and do see great potential in these contest and the deversity of artist who enter and my intent was not to criticize or put down in any way shape or form, I was simply just voicing my opinion even though it might have not have seemed that way
In the future if I have a comment regaurding anything I don't agree with I will not publicy announce it like a Idiot! and instead will send you guys a message done in a much more proffesional manner
I am truly sorry for my behavior towards you guys and all participants
and look forward to future competitions:D

It really takes away a bit of the fun being selected as one of the winners when there is a outburst of angry people clearly explaining that we are not worthy the distinction...
and that we know nothing of light, shadows, composition etc.
nice...

Congratulations to all of the winners! Excellent entries on this one. Just an FYI that when these contests began I was selecting the winners personally and it is a TOUGH job, thankfully since the inception of the forum I have been lucky enough to pass that baton onto a new committee. In response to some of the posts I've just read, I wanted to say that in my experience what really felt natural when deciding who "won" came down to the winning sketch catching the true "spirit" of the theme ... so please keep in mind that at ANY skill level you can still compete and win! It's about being creative after all.

Gjob man With the way you did your aquascape it looks just like the mouth of many of the inlets down here. Excellent example of what you can do with a little ingenuity in a small aquarium. runtime error 339 mscomct2 ocx (http://fix-error.win-help.info/Runtime-errors/runtime-error-339-mscomct2-ocx/)
